I decided I wanted October to be a little deeper.

Just a little more space to slow down and listen inward.

So I’m calling October A Month of Depth, and I’m inviting you to join me.

Each Friday, I’ll share a question for you to journal on. I’ll be answering the questions myself, too, and sharing some of what comes up for me along the way.

Before you write, get out of your head first.

This is important.

Before you sit down with the question, I suggest doing something that helps you settle into your body—a breathing exercise, meditation, yoga, a walk, another form of movement, or simply lying down in savasana.

I put together some of my favorite practices:

Breathing:

Yoga:

Meditation:

Savasana:

You can even try answering the question before and after your practice and notice the difference.

In my experience, the answers that come before tend to be more self-critical and reactive.

The answers that come after are often kinder, more reflective, and a little wiser.

You don’t have to do this perfectly.

Just give yourself a little space and see what comes through.

This week’s question:

I originally was going to ask: What lessons have you learned? What are you currently learning? What do you keep learning?

But as I started to write my answers to the first question I realized how many of the lessons I’ve “learned” are actually lessons I’m still learning.

I know I need alone time.

I know yoga is a lifeline for me.

I know consistency and structure actually create more freedom and flow.

I know that when I give my energy away before tending to myself, life gets harder.

And apparently, I need to keep learning all of these things.

I also know that’s part of the practice.

We learn something.

We forget.

We remember.

We practice it again.

We don’t need to become someone who never forgets.

We just need to get better at coming back, at tending to ourselves.

So that’s your invitation this week:

  • What have you already learned that you are still learning?

Take some time with it. Let yourself be surprised by what comes up.

And if you feel like sharing, comment below. I’d love to hear what you discover.
