MAGICAL HOME

Herbal Allies for Energy Clearing: Guest Post

We are just about halfway through 2020 and our lives are filled with unrest and uncertainty. I feel like it is the perfect time to clear your space with smoke.

If you are like me, you have never been in your home this much for this long, It is time to get rid of any stagnant and negative energy that is hanging around. This will help you shift your energy for the rest of 2020.

In my Free Spirit Guidebook there is a lesson called Clearing your Space with Smoke and Sound.

In this lesson, I suggest that you create an intention or an affirmation to use as you walk around your space.

Some examples are:

  • “Help me clear this space from old, stagnant energy.”
  • “With my intention and this smoke, I clear this space of any negative energy.”

I reached out to my favorite herbalist, Kimberly Kling of Joyful Roots, to help take this lesson even deeper.

I hope you enjoy learning about new herbs to use to clear your space!

Smoke cleansing has been used by many cultures over thousands of years, in both ceremonies and daily life. Also called “smudging” in some cultures, smoke cleansing is done by burning bundles of aromatic dried plants and washing the smoke over a person’s body or throughout a room.

Some of the more well-known plants used for ceremonial smoke cleansing by a variety of cultures are white sage, sweetgrass, juniper, and palo santo. However, there are many other herbs that we can choose which may be more appropriate to our own cultural heritage or be more readily available.

I love making herb bundles from my own garden. There are three herbs which are relatively easy to grow, are commonly found, and make beautiful smoke medicine.

Rosemary

Native to the Mediterranean region, Rosemary is surprisingly hardy and can be grown in many climates. She is one of the oldest herbs for incense and has been used since the time of the early Greeks and Romans (and possibly before that) as an adornment crown to help with memory during examinations. Interestingly, we now know that the essential oils found in Rosemary can be absorbed quickly through the sinus cavity and are absorbed into your bloodstream. Science has confirmed that memory recall is significantly improved with the medicine of Rosemary in your body!

Rosemary is associated with the goddess Aphrodite, and also is considered a plant which protects against evil spirits. Most notably though, it is an herb associated with remembrance. When using Rosemary smoke medicine, she will aid you in cleansing negative energies, help bring forth memories, and also serve as a connection to your ancestors.

Garden Sage

Many species of Salvia (Latin name for sage) are used for smoke cleansing, but good old garden sage is the easiest to come by and still makes for beautiful smoke medicine! It is said that sage removes the energies that stick to you like barnacles. Ancient people burned dried sage in temples and during religious rituals; this is still done today.

Tenth-century Arab physicians said that sage brought immortality and health. It has also been attributed to financial abundance. Used in smoke cleansing, sage has a powerful effect on removing positive ions (carbon dioxide molecules stripped of an electron) from the air, which have been shown to have a negative effect on your body when exposed to them in excess. Sage is wonderful for meditation as well.

Rose

This is probably not a plant you would think of for use in smoke cleansing, but this beautiful flower is a delightful addition to your herb bundles not only for its magic but also for its beauty! Rose is a powerful symbol of love, but it doesn’t stop there. She reminds us of the duality of living here on Earth, showing us that sweetness and beauty can coexist with the sharper aspects of life.

As smoke medicine, rose petals have also been used historically for meditation and for promoting peace. Use the petals to place throughout your herb bundle for pops of color. Rose can offer us sweetness, love, and yet protection – reminding us that it is easier to walk with an open heart when we give ourselves a little shield.

A slight note of caution, not all herbs are safe to burn, so please make sure you are 100% sure of the plant you are using in your herb bundle and that it is safe for smoke medicine.

I hope that this information has encouraged you to try making your own herb bundles or experiment with plants other than the ones you may be most familiar with using. If you do make your own bundles, don’t forget to enjoy the aroma and texture of the plant as you work with your hands and then imbue your bundle with a little blessing. This aspect of creating herb bundles is powerful as well!

Which Element Do You Want To Embody? Earth, Air, Fire, or Water?

Who do you want to be?

What characteristics do you want to embody?

How do you want to feel?

What do you want your life to look like?

What do you want to share with the world?

I chose the main female cards from the Medicine Woman Tarot deck to help you get more intentional about the person you want to be.

The person you are.

Scroll down to pick your card and then share which one you were drawn to in the comments!

Pick Your Medicine Woman Card

You have two ways of choosing:

1. You can close your eyes, breathe deeply, and ask “What energy do I want to embody right now?” and then choose the card above you are most drawn to.

2. You can read the descriptions below, look at the photos (more closeup photos are further down), and choose the one you feel most like embodying right now.

There is no right or wrong and we all embody all of these energies on some level. It is just usually one stands out as more “you” than others.

You might also be drawn to one that is kind of the opposite of you because that is what you need right now.

Have fun and enjoy!

Elemental Rituals

Below are rituals you can do for each card. You can also combine them all to connect with all of the elements.

Connect with & Embody Earth Energy

Find a place to connect to the earth under the moon tonight.

If you can sit on the ground and feel the earth, that would be ideal. If not, use some symbols of earth energy around you such as fruits or vegetables, a houseplant, flower, etc.

If you have one, hold a stone that is red, brown, black or green (any stone is actually fine since they are from the earth).

Or imagine that one of those stones is at the center of the earth and you are connected to it through your energetic roots.

Get comfortable and begin to take some deep breaths.

Say silently or aloud:

I am an Exemplar of Stones. I am connected to the North, Winter, and Night. The earth supports me and I am grateful.

I follow the cycles of nature and teach others how to find abundance through natures principles. I am grounded, content and financially stable.

Notice how saying this makes you feel. Repeat daily if you like.

Seek out ways to continue to connect with earth energy.

***If all of these things were true about you, how would you behave? Start living like that and watch your beautiful life unfold.

Connect with & Embody Air Energy

Find a place where you might feel a breeze under the moon tonight.

Play some music. If you are an artist of any kind, create under the moon.

If you have one, hold a stone that is blue or possibly fluorite, turquoise, angel aura, or citrine.

Or imagine a feather moving around your body and clearing out old and stagnant energy.

Get comfortable and begin to take some deep breaths.

Say silently or aloud:

I am an Exemplar of the Pipes. I am connected to the East, Spring, the Dawn. The air fills me up and I am grateful.

I have a special connection to winged creatures and music. I create my life through imagination and artistic expression and encourages others to do the same. I am always connected to my breath.

Notice how saying this makes you feel. Repeat daily if you like.

Seek out ways to continue to connect with air energy.

***If all of these things were true about you, how would you behave? Start living like that and watch your beautiful life unfold.

Connect with & Embody Fire Energy

Find a place where you will feel warm under the moon tonight. Possibly wrap a warm blanket around you or a make a fire if it can be safely done and you can put it out completely when you are done.

Take this time to write. Maybe answer the questions from the beginning of this post. Don’t hold back.

If you have one, hold a stone that is red, gold, or orange. If not, imagine a flame in your low belly that warms you from the inside out.

Get comfortable and begin to take some deep breaths.

Say silently or aloud:

I am an Exemplar of the Arrows. I am connected to the South, Summer, the Midday. Fire fuels my passions and I am grateful.

I am a strong woman who knows how to use my words to empower others. I have a warrior spirit and help others conquer their fears. I am a passionate woman who takes aim towards the greater good for all.

Notice how saying this makes you feel. Repeat daily if you like.

Seek out ways to continue to connect with fire energy.

***If all of these things were true about you, how would you behave? Start living like that and watch your beautiful life unfold.

Connect with & Embody Water Energy

Find a place near water under the moon tonight. Or bring a small bowl of water or water to drink.

I am connected to the West, Autumn, Sunset. Water keeps my bowl filled and I am grateful.

I am a woman who always sees her bowl as full and is always sharing with others. I allow emotions to flow through me and not keep me stuck. My connection to water keeps me in the flow of life.

Notice how saying this makes you feel. Repeat daily if you like.

Seek out ways to continue to connect with water energy.

Cleaning Ritual for Luck

Did you do a big decluttering this winter because of that Marie Kondo show? I had taken 5 carloads of stuff to Goodwill by the time my husband told me about it. I love decluttering!

Cleaning, on the other hand, not always as much. That is until I started doing it with intention.

Last year on St. Patrick’s Day I created a Mini-Luck Ritual that involved cleaning my front door and entryway.

I did it again this year and added a Lemongrass door wash for luck and wealth.

I have found that when you add intention to mundane tasks like cleaning it changes your mindset and makes it enjoyable and even magical.

Plus, you can add your own creativity too. I am sharing this ritual along with some essential oil suggestions to create your own blend of oils and water to bring good luck into your life and home!

Cleaning Ritual for Luck

Choose your front door or bedroom door. You might also like to do this for the door you the most use to enter your home like a garage door or even a door that goes to your workspace if you work from home.

Supplies:

  • Broom
  • Dustpan
  • Vacuum (optional)
  • Duster or dustcloth
  • Water bucket or bowl
  • Cloth for cleaning
  • Essential oil for luck

First, take a moment and take a deep inhale through your nose and an exhale out of your mouth.

The say mentally or out loud:

I intend to clean this area and welcome luck and joy into my life.

Next, begin to clean around the door by dusting. Try to reach the top of the door, the handles, and any crevices.

Imagine stagnant and old energy being released.

Then, sweep or vacuum the area.

You can even say or think:

I am sweeping away (or sucking up) any blockages to luck and joy flowing into my life.

If you swept, I want to you really enjoy the process of dumping the dustpan into the garbage. If you vacuum, you might like to dump the contents right away to feel like you are removing the old energy from your home.

Now you will create your Lucky Water Wash. This simply consists of water with the essential oil of your choice for luck. There are many so you can also pick one with a smell that you really enjoy.

Essential Oils for Luck

  • Lemongrass – luck associated with wealth
  • Cedarwood – for prosperity and money
  • Bergamot – for success and money
  • Chamomile – for luck and money
  • Sweet Orange – for clearing the space and attracting luck
  • Cinnamon – for money and luck in love

You can also choose oils that simply make you feel lucky when you smell them like possibly peppermint or pine. Also, brands like Young Living have an oil blend called Abundance that would be perfect for this ritual.

Add a few drops of the oil of your choice to your bucket or bowl of warm water. Dip your cloth in the water and wring it out. Then begin to wash your door and entryway while enjoying the scent you chose.

I think it is fun to say or think positive thoughts while doing this part, like:

May this door attract luck and money into my home and life.

or

Allow everyone who touches this handle to have luck come their way.

or

May this door protect me/us and only allow good luck to enter.

Have fun with this part. Really enjoy the scent. Dump the water and start fresh if it gets really dirty. Smile while you are cleaning.

When you are finished, stand in the doorway and breathe deeply.

Imagine green light surrounding you and the doorway.

Mentally or out loud repeat:

I welcome luck and joy into my life.

Enjoy this refreshed area of your home and stay open to the luck all around you!

Spend the rest of your day and life with this welcoming attitude!

Simple Full Moon Ritual

Ooh! One of my favorite things to do on the Full Moon is to set time aside for ritual.

When you first start working with the moon it is best to keep things simple.

It is so easy to get carried away with life and forget to take a moment to slow down, express gratitude, reflect on your New Moon intention, and/or simply enjoy the present moment.

The Full Moon allows you to take this time.

Here is a simple Full Moon Ritual that you can customize and make your own:

Just Me & the Moon (no supplies needed):

  • This can be done outside or inside.
  • Find a place to sit comfortably with a straight spine. If you don’t think you will fall asleep, you can also lie down.
  • Take at least 3 deep breaths in and out of your nose. Or set a timer and breathe deeply for 1 minute. Then allow the breath to relax.
  • If the sky is clear, take some time to gaze at the full moon. If not or the moon has not risen yet, simply close your eyes and imagine a full moon above you.
  • Express thanks for being here right now. Express thanks for anything else you are feeling grateful for.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Imagine the light on the moon coming down into the crown of your head. Imagine that silvery, cool energy moving down your face, over your shoulders, arms, chest, back, belly, hips, and down both legs.
  • As the light moves through your body, imagine tight areas relaxing, dark areas being healed, and blocked areas being opened.
  • Imagine that the light surrounds your body too. Bask in this light.
  • You might like to set a timer, play music, or stay as long as you want.
  • When you are ready, begin to deepen your breath again. Bring your awareness back to your body.
  • Notice how you feel. If any feelings, ideas, or thoughts came up, then take a moment to jot them down.
  • Thank yourself for taking this time. Thank the moon for her healing energy.
  • Know that you can move forward with grace and ease because you took this time for yourself.

How to customize:
  • You can visualize a specific color coming from the moon or notice if a different one shows up in your visualization. Look up the healing properties of that color.
  • If you need some physical healing, allow yourself to have the moonlight focus on a particular area. Imagine that is bringing healing energy to that area.
  • If you need to release a negative habit or memory, imagine the moonlight going into a dark area and shining a healthy light there. Giving you the feeling that you no longer have to hide behind that habit or hide from that memory.

Any of these customizations can be taken deeper.

You might like to ask out loud or in your head to be shown the next steps to take. Trust that by taking this time for yourself tonight that you have raised your vibration to match the healing or opportunities you desire to come to you.

The first part of this is super simple because I believe it is important for you not to get caught up in supplies, astrological signs, a beautiful Instagram shot. While I enjoy these things myself, the whole point of following the moon is to slow down.

When you slow down, your body and mind have a chance to catch up and blend everything together.

So I hope you take the time to sit under the moon and allow her silvery light to connect you with the real you.

How to Create an Ancestor Altar

Mother’s Day is next Sunday and I know that this means a lot of different things to different people. My mom is alive and I will be celebrating with her in the morning with brunch.

My mom’s mom (shown above) passed away long before I was born. Her name was Madeline. During my tarot training, she showed up in some of my meditations and visualizations. Because of this, I decided to create a closer relationship with her.

I talked to my mom about this a bit and she told me that I would have called her Nana. I now ask her for guidance on a regular basis.

Now when I tune in and pray, I ask God, Angels, Guides, Bear, Gloria (my name for my higher self), Nana Madeline, Wolf, and Owl to help me. (This has evolved. About 5 years ago, I started simply with Universe.)

I imagine her standing behind my right shoulder. I feel supportive and comforting energy coming from her.

On Mother’s Day, I plan on making a point to spend some time with her by creating an altar and I thought you might like to do the same with a mother or mother-figure from your life.

Here are some ways you can create an ancestor altar and spend some intentional time with a loved one this weekend.

Create an Ancestor Altar

Ahead of time:
  1. Get a photo or photos to display.
  2. If you do not have a photo, find something that reminds you of this person.
  3. Gather candles – possibly in the colors and scents that the person loved.
  4. Pick or find out something that they loved eating or drinking and make sure you have it on hand. ie. Chamomile Tea, Lemon Cookies, Sangria.
  5. Designate a space for your altar.
Day of:
  1. Put the photos or items on your altar.
  2. Light your candles.
  3. Ask the person or persons you are honoring to be with you.
  4. Close your eyes and imagine them there.
  5. Enjoy the food and/or drink that they loved. (If for any reason, you do not like or cannot consume what they loved then simply offer it to them.)
  6. Enjoy this time and this connection.
  7. You can ask if they have any messages for you. Listen and possibly write down any guidance you receive.
  8. Allow any part of the experience to become a sign or symbol of their presence in your life. i.e. The color pink, the scent of Gardenia, the food or drink that they loved.
  9. Thank them for their love and support.
Tips:
  • You can keep this altar up or create it again when needed.
  • Either let the candles burn all the way down or save them for when you want to connect with this person again.
  • If there is drink left over it might be nice to empty it outside on a plant or tree. If there is food leftover, then save it for later, share with someone else, or possibly compost, give to the family dog, or throw away with loving intention.
  • You can do this on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays.
  • Feel free to make it simpler or more elaborate depending on the amount of time, your mood, and desires.

If you create an ancestor altar, feel free to tag me @kerry_burki or use the hashtag #kerryburki so I can check it out.

Happy Mothers Day!!!
